Abstract:Guangxi region is one of the important stations on the ancient Maritime Silk Road. The research on the exchange and dissemination of gold bead ornaments is a new perspective for exploring the interaction between ancient Chinese and Western cultures. This project selects some gold bead ornaments unearthed from the Han Dynasty tombs in Guigang city of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southern China. These gold bead ornaments were investigated by using non-destructive analysis instruments such as scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometer(SEM-EDS), and optical microscope(OM) to observe the surface traces and the main components of the gold artifacts, in order to reveal their technical connotations and manufacturing processes, and provide an important scientific basis for clarifying the basic technical characteristics and technical sources of Han Dynasty gold bead ornaments in the Guangxi region. Stereomicroscope and scanning electron microscope were used to observe the surface of the gold bead decorations, perforated areas, etc., to search for their processing traces. The composition of different parts and phases of the gold artifacts were analyzed by energy dispersive spectroscopy to clarify the material properties and uniformity of the gold artifacts. The results show that the three sets of gold bead ornaments in this study are all made by hammering, welding and other processing. Two sets of gold bead ornaments are made by the sheet rolling method, i.e., a piece of gold sheet is bent and welded together; Another set is made by the splicing method, i.e., two gold sheets are joined together and then welded together. Among them, two sets of gold bead ornaments are made of Au-Ag alloy with low Ag content, which the components at each inspection point are not much different, and they are possible that smelted natural gold is used; Another set of gold bead ornaments also use Au-Ag alloy, but the percentage of Au is slightly lower, which the composition at each detection point varies greatly, and Cu can be detected at individual points, and it is speculated that natural gold is used as the material for this piece of gold bead ornament. The designs and craftsmanship of the three sets of gold bead ornaments should originate from the Western culture. Among them, two sets are highly probable foreign imports, while the third set appears to be a local imitation.
